I'm excited to share the film that was created from a short play I wrote that addresses the complex dynamics of behavioral health challenges and chronic homelessness.
It tells the story of a woman who lived on a bus stop bench for nearly 11 months on A1A in Fort Lauderdale. Throughout that time, I conducted occasional wellness checks on her. One Sunday morning, I discovered her in distress—unable to walk and sitting on the bench in her own feces. I spent the rest of the day working to connect her with the necessary services. Fortunately, I reached out to someone I knew in the field, who responded immediately. That night, she was Baker Acted, and just a few days later, she underwent surgery to repair a broken hip.
I want to emphasize that homelessness is not a personal choice; it is a community challenge that requires our collective effort to address. By amplifying the need, we can work towards meaningful solutions.
