The purpose of the RESPITE Scholarship is to assist individuals residing in Broward County who require financial assistance to enter a supportive living environment as part of their journey toward greater independence and improved behavioral health. This scholarship is made possible through funding from Broward County. Eligible referrals must have a documented mental health diagnosis, demonstrate a willingness to actively participate in case management programs, and lack adequate insurance coverage or financial resources to cover the costs of residential services. Referrals for the RESPITE Scholarship must be initiated by a Broward County Behavioral Health Provider Peer Specialist or case manager. RESPITE scholarship programs are available starting at our standard housing fee and may cover additional service programs. These programs are a part of our continuance of care initiative and is a case management referral program that includes consistent communication updates with the assigned case manager, emergency transportation, MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment) services, and/or food provisions. Services are offered to individuals who demonstrate a need and lack access to these essential resources.
Persons who qualify and are accepted for the RESPITE Scholarship will receive funding to help cover the initial costs of residency. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, and there is no specific deadline for submission. Please be aware that the availability of RESPITE funding may be limited. Completing the referral process for the RESPITE Scholarship does not guarantee financial assistance. The RESPITE Scholarship is intended to address the needs of individuals stepping down from hospital and non-hospital behavioral health treatment programs or those facing significant financial barriers to accessing supportive living. To be considered, the referred individual seeking assistance through the RESPITE Scholarship must require financial assistance to move into Adult Residential Communities as part of their plan to improve their behavioral health and well-being. Be a resident of Broward County. While there is no minimum consecutive residency period required, preference may be given to long-term residents.
Referrals who have previously resided at Adult Residential Communities under the RESPITE Scholarship may be eligible again, subject to a re-evaluation and confirmation that all current eligibility requirements are satisfied.
Demonstrate a willingness to actively participate in case management programs.
Have a documented mental health diagnosis.
Lack adequate insurance coverage or financial resources to cover the costs of residential services.
The scholarship is open to individuals who are an established resident of Broward County. While there is no minimum consecutive residency period required, preference may be given to long-term residents. Having their home address/county changed while in an inpatient facility or listing the facility’s county on the application does not meet the residency requirement.
Applicants must be residents of Broward County. Although there is no required length of continuous residency, preference may be given to individuals who have lived in the county long-term. Please note: listing the address of an inpatient facility located outside Broward County does not meet the residency requirement, even if that was your location at the time of application.
Yes, it is possible for a referral to receive the RESPITE Scholarship more than once, provided all current eligibility requirements are met at the time of re-application and a new referral is submitted by a Broward County Behavioral Health Provider Peer Specialist or case manager.
No. If an individual leaves our supportive living residence before the end of their RESPITE Scholarship funding period, they will be discharged from the program and forfeit any remaining funds. However, their Broward County Behavioral Health Provider may submit a new referral for potential re-enrollment in the RESPITE Scholarship program, provided all eligibility requirements are met.
